The Old Pueblo
Thursday 25 March 2010 - 15:23:10
There's no doubt that Mojácar is old. It's been clinging to the top of that mountain for thousands of years. Narrow streets and white flat-roofed houses crowning the final hill as the sierra marches down towards the warm Mediterranean below.
Unfortunately, to state the obvious, the custodianship of the pueblo has remained in the hands of the Mojaqueros and therein lies its current parlous situation. The Town Hall (prop. Rosmari Cano) will vote tomorrow to knock down the Loro Azul and the old schoolmasters' homes (currently doing sterling duty as public lavatories) up by the church, to join the other buildings levelled up there a few years back, making an enormous three-block-large space which, says the mayoress, will emphatically not become a parking spot. So what's going on up there? A delightful new plaza with, as rumours suggest, an underground parking?
Mojácar, an old, old pueblo - now with a bald spot.
