A reader who lives on Mojácar Playa tells me that large parties of Spanish singles congregate there late nights on weekends and that they tend to cause a certain amount of havoc. You may have seen broken street signs here and there as you drive along in the convoys of summer traffic (the town hall admits to 15,000 euros worth of street-damage on the Moors and Christians weekend). Here’s a quote from her letter:
Littering the street with bottles, cans and beakers, street signs broken down and brought back to the apartments - damage to our swimming pool area because they climb in when the gate is closed - last week they broke a sombrilla from the side of the pool and threw it into the pool (post and all) along with a supermarket trolley and two sun loungers - all in the bottom of the pool... the weekend before it was large rocks in the bottom of the pool - we don't know where they got the rocks - there are none by our pool... here in our roads we get no sleep on Friday and Saturday nights... the police are called regularly...
So far, the town hall hasn’t reacted to complaints (tourists seem to get better treatment in our town than residents do) and I can tell you that a Spanish daily paper is currently preparing an article on ‘unruly tourism in Mojácar’.
