Consumer Association Threatened For Defending Consumers
Sunday 05 August 2012 - 01:47:08
FACUA is the consumers' association. It's an NGO that's been around since 1981. It is responsible for choosing 'the worst company of the year' (Moviestar has won for the past three years) and for policing and denouncing illegal mortgage practices, telephone spam, SMS fraud, restrictive politics, Ryanair... as well as the more common consumer problems in the supermarket, the pharmacy, bank and lawyers office.
Unfortunately - if not unsurprisingly - FACUA has been vocal in its criticism of los recortes, the cut-backs in public service. This has, in turn, attracted the ire of the Ministry of Health, which has given the association two weeks to back off from its 'overreaching attitude'. If they don't desist, they could lose their charter as an NGO.

Later: The ministry is falling over itself backing down...
